Walking and wheeling safely in your neighbourhood
Walking and wheeling (scooting, biking or skateboarding) helps tamariki to learn about road safety and gain independence.
Parking and driving safely in your neighbourhood
Children are still learning about road safety and may be unpredictable; adults need to drive carefully and park safely. Adults, set a good example – kids will copy you.
Crossing the road and sneaky driveways
Use the ‘kerb drill’ (see Māia Confidence resource for in class learning). Always walk across the road. Remember, drivers may not see you.

Safer parking at the school gate
Auckland Transport have shared this amusing take on the school gate parking chaos we often see. "Karen" from the "Fine Prevention Department" highlights some of the behaviours we don't want to see from whānau picking up their tamariki.
Let's be a bit more "nice Karen" and keep all our tamariki safe.
Remember:
Stop and park where it is safe and legal to do so, even if this means parking a bit further away from the gate.
If your kids are a bit older, you can organise a place to meet where you know they can safely walk to and you can find a park more easily. Ask your school if they might be interested in setting up a Walking Pou.
Always use crossings if they are available, even when you're not with your tamariki. Set a good example for any small eyes (or big) watching you!
Children are still learning about road safety and may be unpredictable; adults need to drive carefully and park safely. So slow down, be aware and avoid crossing footpaths.
Kia haumaru! Be safe!
