Why Movin’March?
Ko tā Māehe Haere he whakatairanga i ngā hua o te hīkoikoi, pānukunuku me te kake paiki ki te kura.
Movin’March celebrates the benefits of walking, scooting and biking to school.
Greater Wellington encourages schools and whānau across the region to walk or wheel to/from school over March. Movin'March is free for schools and ideally suited for Years 0-8. Walking, biking, and scooting to school not only eases congestion at the gate, it’s also good for the planet. Walking or wheeling increases independence, well-being, road safety skills and a sense of belonging to the local neighbourhood.
Hear from students and whānau themselves - 10 years later
In 2015 Greater Wellington made a video celebrating Māehe Manawa Ora Movin'March, an annual programme which promotes walking, scooting, and biking to school.
Movin’March continues to encourage tamariki to choose active ways of getting to school. This story looks at what that impact can look like over time.
Post-March 2026 update
2026 was an awesome year for Movin'March! Despite the education environment being particularly busy, kura and kaiako across the region embraced the call to get Movin'! We welcomed back over a hundred schools, some who have been participating for over 15 years! And said a warm 'haere mai' to two school new to Movin'March. We hope you'll be back for more!
We made some changes in 2026 – some controversial even – and we're going through your feedback so we can make 2027 even better (is that a faint echo calling "bring back WoW passports!" I hear?).
We'll keep working on improving our tools, so you can get back to encouraging your tamariki to walk and wheel! Your feedback and ideas are always welcome, so don't be shy to share. :-)
A huge thanks to all teachers, school staff, whānau, volunteers, and of course, all the ākonga who took part! It doesn't happen without you!

What was new in 2026?
- There will be no WOW passport competition (that’s right! No more stamping and returning of passports required!)
- Instead there is a region-wide class competition with 6 prizes to be won. See our WOW Class Challenge page for more information:
- Every class will receive a WOW wallchart, bookmarks and stickers for each ākonga to set their personal goals.
- To take part in the competition, teachers enter 5 consecutive days of travel data in Te Haerenga o ngā Tamarikiopen_in_new.
- Enviroschools facilitatorsopen_in_new can help you with school planning and student action.
- We’ve revised and expanded many learning resources that support Movin’March. You’ll find these on our Movin'March resources page.
What’s the same?
- Every school will get a prize pack early in Term 1 to use as spot prizes, with a mix of new and old favourites, see Prize Packs. Use these alongside the new WOW wallcharts and stickers to encourage tamariki to meet their goals.
- As well as Enviroschools facilitators being at hand, your local council and Greater Wellington are here to help support your school through Movin’March. Get in touch and tell us what you’re planning and how we can help.
- Registrations will open in early November. Note there are no earlybird prizes this year. Registering is all your school needs to do to receive your prize pack.
- We’ll continue to keep you updated with our regular Mailchimp newsletters and you can always contact us with questions at schooltravel@gw.govt.nz.
- If you’d like to still receive some WOW passports for your own use, please email schooltravel@gw.govt.nz.
