About Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week was established in 2012 by the Brake Charitable Trust. It is supported by Waka Kotahi and Beca.

An A4 flyer which provides tips and advice on how everyone can be safe when moving around or playing in their neighbourhoods.

Safe speeds around schools 

In both English and te reo Māori, there are 3 lessons for Y1-8 to investigate changes to speed limits around schools.  

  • Lesson 1: Persuasive writing  

  • Lesson 2: Hands-on science

Kerb drill and driveway videos and songs

Police Road Safety resources for schools

The following Road Safe  resources support students to learn and apply a range of safe practices they can use when acting as a pedestrian, passenger, cyclist, or driver.

There are 4 learning resources covering 4 focus areas, per year group:   

  • Y0-1: Roads and traffic, On the move, By bus or by car, Managing hazards.

  • Y2-3: Roads and traffic, On the move, By bus or by car, Managing hazards.

  • Y4-6: Passengers and Pedestrians, Safe cycling, Cycling with confidence, Preparing for future on road cycling.

  • Y7-8: Safety checks, Out and about in traffic, Out and about responsibly, Cycling out and about.

Helping Hands Handbook  

The Helping Hands Handbookopen_in_new provides information for adults to help keep children safe on the roads. It is a guide for parents and caregivers covering fifteen topics to teach their child in a what to teach, why to teach and how to teach format.  

 

The Road Safe Activity Book provides helpful information and activities for children Y1-8 to keep safe on the road  

There are 15 topics and worksheets, including:
