Everything you need to know, about using the WoW wallchart in class and/or entering the regional competition, including a handy list of mode icons to pin next to your wallchart.

Click on the button below to open the guide in a new tab, or read on for the overview of the competition. Updated version includes new tally sheet and mode codes.

Update: Mode codes and Tally cheat sheet

We've updated the form in the Wallchart guide (above) to make it easier to use. Below are two options:

  1. A student guide - print this out and hang it near the wallchart. Choose one of the code letter options, or make your own. Save the stickers and stamps for handing out, rather than using them on the Wallchart.
  2. Teacher tally sheet - use this sheet to collect "hands up" trip data each day, so you can quickly and easily enter it into Te Haerenga o ngā Tamariki for the competition. Once students have put their hand up for their mode they can go over to the wallchart to add it on the chart (in a very calm and organised way!)

New: WOW Class Challenge

This is a competition that rewards classes (not individuals) and replaces the WOW passport competition.

Using the wallchart in class

You can use the wallchart in class, alongside the bookmarks and stickers to set individual goals or a class challenge. This creates a visual aid for students to track – and reward – their participation against their personal goals.

Set each student’s goal and record how tamariki get to school using stickers, stamps or ticks for trips to school. Use prize packs to incentivise, and supplement with other prizes such as winning privileges or activities.

Your class can track the distance travelled by the whole class over March by estimating each student's trip distance, or challenge your class to beat their record from week to week. Observe how the weather or events may impact how ākonga travel to school.

Use Te Haerenga o ngā Tamariki and our customised learning experiences alongside the wallchart. Data can also be entered online, on the day, or using our new bulk entry function, to create relatable learning experiences.

Regional Class Competition

The competition is open to all classes of students at registered schools and runs 2-31 March 2026. You must enter your data by 20 April 2026.

Use the WOW wallchart to set goals and enter 5 consecutive days of data into Te Haerenga o ngā Tamarikiopen_in_new. Your class will then be in to win one of 6 class prize packs. There are 3 x random prize draws and 3 x celebration packs for classes with the top walking and wheeling rates.

For your class to take part in the competition, teachers must enter 5 consecutive days (Monday-Friday) of travel data on Te Haerenga o ngā Tamarikiopen_in_new. All class entries for 5 consecutive days automatically go into the competition. You can use the same account as for Kura Kete.

How to participate in competition

  1. Schools register for Movin’March. Your lead teacher will distribute prize packs to all classes at your school in late February.
  2. Each class will receive a WoW Challenge wallchart with stickers, bookmarks and stamps.
  3. Ākonga set an achievable goal on the wallchart and record trips over March. They can copy their goal onto a bookmark to take home and share with whānau. Use stickers, stamps or ticks to mark progress.
  4. Note only trips TO school are eligible.
  5. Promote the challenge to your school community:
    • See Newsletter promotion for helpful content.
    • Set up dedicated drop-off points (e.g. Park & Stride locations) for students who live too far away to walk or wheel the whole way.
    • Use prize packs to incentivise and supplement these with other prizes such as privileges and activities.
  6. To be in to win one of 6 prizes, teachers will select a challenge week by choosing 5 consecutive days (preferably where participation rates are highest) and enter travel data in Te Haerenga o ngā Tamarikiopen_in_new.
  7. Travel data will need to be entered no later than 20 April 2026 to be eligible.

Notes:

  • If you need more wallcharts: download here, (274 KB, Pdf) or if you need stickers: order more here (it can take up to 4 working days for these to be received. We have limited stock so may not be able to provide more).
  • Classes do not have to take part in the prize competition. Simply use the wallchart, stickers and bookmarks in class or alongside our suggestions in the guide or learning resource.
  • Entering 5 consecutive days (Monday to Friday) of data in Te Haerenga o ngā Tamarikiopen_in_new will be considered an entry in the competition. Winning entries will be asked to confirm they agree to the Terms (link to come) before being able to accept the prize.
  • Prizes are yet to be confirmed but will consist of a class celebration pack, such as free entry to a local destination or or an in-school active travel celebration day with prizes to keep, to the value of around $400-800 each.
